Do you have any tips to share with someone just starting out? What is the best way to learn lightsaber combat? Should I look to learn it locally, or can I learn it from videos and the Internet as well?

There are some YouTube channels where techniques can be shown, of various styles people have created.

I myself wrote a book called 'Stunt Lightsaber Combat for Beginners' which makes it easy for a beginner with no prior martial art background to learn some basics.

If possible, getting involved with a local saber club is something to do as well.

I will check out your book for sure. I think a combination of reading up on it and watching channels on YouTube might help me out, if I can`t find a good saber club in my area.

I was going to ask the same thing. That book looks like a good item to start with. I have watched some videos on Youtube but none of them really explained what the rules are or what was going on.

I actually find watching videos and people live in person is the best thing you can do when you start out. And NEVER practice in your house unless you have a wide open place... I learned that the hard way lol

Haha I actually tried this and broke something that my mom was not too happy about. She told me if I want to be like a Jedi I need to use my force and find an apartment. lol

Well I guess just watch things and try things. I always learned best from hands on experience. If you don't know anyone who wants to spar, find someone at least willing to help you practice.

Oh no! haha I would have lost it if my mother ever told me that. She likes the movies but doesn't understand them enough. lol!!

LOL yeah she has some wit that one. I gotta love her for that. Even when she is mad about something she can make a joke to take it pressure off.

    She sounds awesome!

And back on topic. Something else that has helped me out is actually looking at pictures of people doing different stances. Kind of like looking at yoga pose pictures. As sill as it sounds it gives you an idea on how to hold your body.

Watch videos, read topics, ask questions, and see what works for you as far as finding a saber goes.
I think it is best to find a trainer in your area but if you can't, stick to videos till you can.
