Do you think having a martial arts background in certain fighting styles beneficial when initial starting out learning saber combat arts?

Absolutely! If you have prior martial art experience then it makes it easier to pick up the moves.

  3. Unarmed arts are not that beneficial - but they train timing, distance and basic movement. So, that's better than nothing.
But when handling a weapon (any weapon), things get a lot more complicated. Measure depends not only on ones reach but also on the length of the weapon. A hit with a weapon is enough to finish the fight (depending on location an weapon), while unarmed one may absorb a lot of punishment.
I think, any weapon-using martial art gives a good base for lightsaber, though if it's real dueling you're after, don't expect too much from form-only arts.

I think having some kind of martial arts background surely helps with learning stances, steps and dodging. Of course, wielding a weapon when fighting is surely different from hand to hand combat unarmed, that is for sure.
