I shared about my interest with a few people, and their reactions weren't good...

So I told my girlfriend, a few friends, and my brother about this.

I showed them videos and explained my interest in wanting to get into actual tournaments and battles with other people. My girlfriend thought I was joking but eventually was supportive, my friends all basically laughed at me, and my brother told me how fake it is.

So yeah... What reactions have you gotten from others?

Well, I haven't really talked about it with anyone I know yet because they already consider my a weirdo and a strange man for owning all the Star Wars stuff I do. I don't care what they think of me, I enjoy it, but I am just saving the explaining of it all.

That is a good thing. I am not ashamed either. I love Star Wars, Pokemon, video games, comics, I even wear glasses. I am considered a grade A nerd. I like who I am though. Screw what others think!

Well my girlfriend is a fellow fan of Star Wars so she was all for it! All my friends think it is sweet, even my mom called it "neat" haha

My family, well most of my family, is hugely into Star Wars so they love it. My younger brother (who is 14) will be joining me soon actually. My friends think its cool but they said they would be too embarrassed to join.

We've got about 1,000 people following the Facebook page so far (which I happened to start before creating this forum).

The Ultrasaber FB page also has 580K+ followers, so that's a healthy level of interest in this hobby.

I think it is sad when you share something that makes you happy and the people who say they care mock you or think it is stupid. I had a friend do this to me when I was younger. I really liked Wrestling and WWE and he made fun of me for liking it so I told him, if you were a true friend something like this wouldn't bother you. I never talked to him again after that.

I agree completely. If you have to hide part of who you are from the people who say they care about you... Maybe you need to consider who you call a "friend".

EXACTLY! If I can't be who I am and be liked/loved then I don't want to be in that kind of relationship be it family, friends, or more (spouse/girlfriend)

I am glad to see others who are more about enjoyment than what others think. I hate to see a person lesson their enjoyment in life because of fear. I dealt with it for years and it wasn't fun.

Same here. I spent many years trying to impress people. There is no self love in that.

That is actually a huge issue with things like this. We love being a part of it but so many people laugh and make fun of it that it gets to the point where it discourages others from joining in.
The older you get the less you care. Self love is more important then loving others because you can love someone else entirely until you first learn to love and accept yourself!

My current girlfriend... well, I guess I can call her that anyways...
Yeah she don't have any interest in this. We have been dating or rather "going on dates" for a month now...
Beginning to thing I need to find someone who shares my interests.

I agree. I may still be on the young side but I have grown a lot and I feel like I am able to care less today then I did when I was 14/15.
